FAQs

How do I schedule an appointment?

You can schedule by calling Essential Dermatology during office hours. Our business number is 919-205-4473

Do I need a referral to see a dermatologist at Essential Dermatology?

Most patients do not need a referral. If your insurance plan requires one for coverage, please arrange this ahead of your visit and bring any required documentation.

How far in advance should I book?

Our schedule can fill quickly, particularly for cosmetic services and full‑body skin examinations. We recommend booking several weeks in advance. If you have an urgent concern, call us—we’ll do our best to fit you in promptly.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring a valid photo ID, your insurance card, a list of current medications, and any relevant records such as prior dermatology notes or pathology reports. If you have been seen by Dr. Newsome within the past 3 years at a different location please bring all records.

What is your cancellation or no‑show policy?

We ask that you give at least 24 business hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Missed appointments or late cancellations may result in a fee so we can continue to offer timely care to all patients.

Should I wear makeup or remove nail polish for my appointment?

For skin checks or evaluations, please arrive with clean skin and minimal or no makeup so we can fully assess your skin. If possible, remove nail polish so we can also examine the skin under your nails.

Do I need to stop certain medications before a procedure?

Some treatments require pausing specific medications or skin products. Our team will review your medications in advance and provide clear instructions if needed.

How do I prepare for a skin biopsy or surgical procedure?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the treatment area. Avoid applying heavy lotions, makeup, or self‑tanning products to the site. We’ll give you customized instructions if additional preparation is required.

What information should I gather about my medical history or family history of skin conditions?

Bring information about any past skin conditions, biopsies, or family history of skin cancer or melanoma. This helps us personalize your care.

What happens during a full body skin examination?

You’ll change into a gown, and our dermatologist will examine your skin from head to toe—including areas not usually exposed to the sun—to look for any suspicious moles or lesions. If something looks concerning, we may recommend a biopsy, photographs for monitoring, or a follow‑up.

How do I care for my skin after a biopsy, excision, or cosmetic treatment?

We’ll provide specific aftercare instructions, but in general, keep the area clean, follow dressing instructions, and contact us if you notice redness, swelling, or drainage.

How long do results from Botox or fillers last?

On average, Botox results last 3–4 months, and fillers last 6–18 months depending on the product and area treated. We will review expected results and maintenance schedules at your visit.

Do cosmetic treatments require downtime?

Most treatments have little to no downtime. Some may involve temporary redness, swelling, or flaking. We’ll discuss what to expect before your treatment so you can plan accordingly.

Are there risks or side effects to procedures?

All procedures have some level of risk. Common minor side effects include bruising or mild irritation. We’ll review all risks, benefits, and alternatives with you before proceeding.

What are your office hours?

Essential Dermatology is open Tuesday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We value punctuality to keep visits running smoothly.

What if I’m running late for my appointment?

Please call us as soon as possible. We do offer a grace period of 15 minutes. Beyond that time we may need to reschedule to ensure we provide quality care to all patients.

Can I email or text my dermatologist with questions?

For your privacy and medical accuracy, we do not use email or text for medical advice. Please call our office or use the patient portal for secure communication.

Who do I contact in case of an emergency?

If you experience a life‑threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For urgent concerns outside of business hours, please call our main number for after‑hours instructions.
