Warts

Warts are caused by HPV, which infects the top layer of the skin, leading to excess cell growth. The virus spreads through direct skin contact or contact with contaminated surfaces, such as shared towels, gym equipment, or swimming pools. Small cuts or breaks in the skin increase the risk of infection.

Warts often go away on their own but can take months or years to disappear. Various treatment options are available to speed up removal and prevent spreading. There are at-home options including OTC wart treatments with salicylic acid and using duct tape. There are several in office treatments. Dr. Newsome offers cryosurgery (freezing), prescription medications (fluorouracil), intralesional candida antigen and bleomycin. In people with a weakened immune system like those with cancer, diabetes, HIV or on  immunosuppressive medications. it may be very difficult to treat warts.

You can prevent warts by not picking/touching warts, keeping feet clean and dry, wearing shoes in public places, and not sharing personal items like towels, razors, or nail clippers. Safe-sex practices can help reduce risk of contracting genital warts.
