Excessive Sweating
What Is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes excessive sweating beyond what is needed to help control body temperature. Common affected areas include the hands, feet, underarms, and face. It often leads to discomfort and embarrassment.
- Primary Focal Hyperhidrosis: A genetic condition that usually begins in childhood or adolescence, affecting specific areas such as the palms, soles, underarms, and face.
- Secondary Generalized Hyperhidrosis: Excessive sweating caused by an underlying medical condition or medication, often affecting larger areas of the body.
- Excessive sweating that disrupts daily activities
- Sweating even when the body is at rest
- Visible dampness on clothing, hands, or feet
- Skin irritation or infections due to moisture buildup
- Overactive sweat glands (Primary Hyperhidrosis)
- Underlying conditions such as diabetes, infections, thyroid disorders, or menopause (Secondary Hyperhidrosis)
- Certain medications- antidepressants, hormonal medications, NSAIDs, antipsychotics, ADHD medications, albuterol
Dr. Newsome offers a variety of treatment options tailored to your needs, including:
Non-Invasive Treatments:
Prescription Antiperspirants: Stronger than over-the-counter options to reduce excessive sweating
Medications: Oral and topical anti-cholinergic medications can help block sweat gland stimulation.
Non-medicine therapy:
Iontophoresis: A water-based therapy that reduces excessive sweating in the hands and feet.
There are other treatment options available such as neurotoxin (Botox), Miradry, and surgery for severe/advanced cases. Dr. Newsome does not offer these treatments and would be happy to refer to other physicians if desired.
