PRP for Hair Loss
What is PRP?
Plasma rich platelet (PRP) is an autologous therapy in which a solution of plasma and platelets release growth factors that enhance hair growth through angiogenesis, stem cell stimulation, which leads to prolongation of anagen (growing phase). This leads to improved hair thickness and hair density. There are different FDA approved medical devices used for PRP acquisition but their use in hair loss and facial rejuvenation is off-label and not covered by insurance. Insurance will not be billed for the procedure.
The most common type of hair loss studies for PRP is androgenetic alopecia “female or male pattern hair loss”. It can also be used for other types of hair loss like scarring alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata. It is typically combined with other treatments for hair loss such as minoxidil, spironolactone, finasteride.
Treatment response varies among patients and does not work for everyone. A series of three treatments every 4-6 weeks is recommended with every 6–12-month maintenance treatment.
It may take 3-6 months after the last treatment to see results.
For hair loss, the procedure takes about 45-60 minutes including photographs, consent, blood acquisition, centrifugation, transfer, and application. You may return to work post procedure. Your scalp may be sore for 24-72 hours. Potential side effects may include headaches, bruising, swelling. No aggressive manipulation including wearing hats or washing hair is recommended for the first 24 hours. Do not lay down for 4 hours after treatment. Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours. Do not apply minoxidil for 48 hours starting day of treatment. Tylenol and/or ice may be used if needed.
While PRP does not “cure” hair loss and each type of hair loss responds differently to treatment, most patients can expect increased hair density and strand thickness.
