Eye Rejuvenation

Eye Rejuvenation

The eye area is one of the first places to show signs of aging. As we age, the delicate skin around the eyes becomes thinner, collagen production decreases, and muscles and fat pads may shift. These changes can lead to a tired or aged appearance—even when you feel well-rested and vibrant. Eye rejuvenation treatments in dermatology offer safe, effective options to refresh and restore a more youthful look without surgery.

Eye rejuvenation involves using non-surgical cosmetic procedures to improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelid area. These treatments aim to reduce visible signs of aging and enhance the natural beauty of your eyes.

Patients seek eye rejuvenation for a variety of cosmetic concerns. These include fine lines and crow’s feet, under-eye hollows/tear troughs, eye bags or puffiness, dark under-eye circles, even skin tone or texture

Several factors contribute to changes in the eye area over time:

  • Aging: Natural collagen and elastin loss leads to wrinkles and sagging.
  • Sun exposure: UV radiation damages the skin and accelerates aging.
  • Genetics: Some people are more prone to under-eye puffiness, dark circles, or early wrinkling.
  • Lifestyle: Poor sleep, stress, smoking, and diet can affect skin quality.
  • Volume loss: Fat loss in the midface and around the eyes can create shadows and hollows.

Dr. Austin Newsome uses a range of techniques and treatments, often in combination, to address the complex anatomy of the eye area. The goal is to achieve natural-looking, refreshed results. Here are the most used modalities:

Neurotoxin (Botox)

Botulinum toxin injections are used to soften dynamic wrinkles—those caused by facial expressions such as squinting or smiling. Common treatment areas include:

  • Crow’s feet (wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes)
  • Bunny lines (wrinkles on the upper side of the nose)
  • Brow lift (a subtle lift to open the eyes)

These treatments typically last 3–4 months and can be repeated regularly for ongoing results.

Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic acid-based (HA) fillers can restore volume under the eyes and in the tear trough area, which often becomes hollow with age. By carefully placing filler in the under-eye region and midface, Dr. Newsome can:

  • Smooth under-eye hollows
  • Reduce the appearance of dark circles (from shadowing)
  • Support the cheek area for a more lifted look

There are several HA fillers that are used to treat this area. Results can last 6–18 months depending on the product used. During a consultation, Dr. Newsome will discuss which product is appropriate.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser treatments such as fractional CO2 or erbium lasers are effective for improving fine lines, skin texture, and pigmentation around the eyes. They work by stimulating collagen production and resurfacing the skin. Depending on the laser intensity, downtime may range from a few days to two weeks.

Laser resurfacing can be ideal for patients with:

  • Fine crepey lines on the lower eyelids
  • Sun damage and pigmentation
  • Skin laxity

Microneedling and RF Microneedling

Microneedling with or without radiofrequency (RF) energy helps tighten the skin, improve texture, and stimulate collagen in the eye area. These treatments are less aggressive than lasers and may require multiple sessions for optimal results. They are often combined with serums, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), or growth factors for enhanced outcomes.

Skincare and Topical Treatments

A medical-grade skincare routine is essential for maintaining and enhancing treatment results. Daily sunscreen use is critical to protect the delicate eye area from further damage.

Common active ingredients that are used include:

  • Retinoids: To increase cell turnover and reduce fine lines
  • Antioxidants (e.g., Vitamin C): To brighten and protect the skin
  • Peptides and growth factors: To promote firmness
  • Eye creams with caffeine or hyaluronic acid: To reduce puffiness and hydrate

Most eye rejuvenation treatments are performed in-office with minimal downtime. A thorough consultation with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Newsome is important to determine which combination of treatments is best suited to your goals, anatomy, and skin type.

Results are usually seen within a few days to weeks depending on the treatment, and they can be maintained with regular follow-ups, proper skincare, and sun protection.
